MYP

Middle Years Programme

The International Baccalaureate MYP is a five-year programme of international education designed for students 11-16 years of age. The IB MYP recognises that students of this age group are in a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development. It recognizes that young adolescence is a time of uncertainty, sensitivity, resistance and questioning. The IB MYP seeks to provide young adolescents with an educational programme that offers structure, skills and challenging standards, but also creativity and flexibility. IB MYP also strives to help students develop their own personal value system that will help guide their lives as thoughtful members of local and global communities.Through the MYP we hope that students see their learning as relevant and meaningful in a larger diverse world.

The IB MYP curriculum model has eight subject groups (see figure 1 ), with equal curriculum time given to each subject. At the center of the model is the student, with the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. In the model, the student is surrounded by approaches to teaching and learning that support inquiry. These approaches to inquiry are grounded in global contexts and conceptual understanding to facilitate real world connections and deep understanding. The combining of these four aspects near the center emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the model. The subjects around the edge of the model signify the shift from PYP’s transdisciplinary approach to discrete subjects with an interdisciplinary approach. The action, service and projects rings indicate some of the important outcomes of the programme. The outer ring emphasizes the overall goal for all learners: international mindedness.

IB MYP GLOBAL CONTEXTS 

Global contexts direct learning toward independent and shared inquiry into our common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet. Using the world as the broadest context for learning, our aim is to construct meaningful explorations into: • Identities and relationships • Orientation in space and time • Personal and cultural expression • Scientific and technical innovation • Globalization and sustainability • Fairness and development

 

This exposure to a broad range of disciplinary learning experiences ensures that students do not specialise too early in their secondary school careers and complete Year 11 equipped to make informed choices as to their IB CP/DP subjects. 

The Personal Project 

Any Year 11 student enrolled in the school prior to 1 October is expected to complete the Personal Project. The Personal Project is completed over the course of seven months and is a significant piece of self-directed inquiry driven by the students’ own interests and creativity. Over the course of the year students are expected to engage in planning, research and personal reflections. The final product can take on many forms, such as essays, vlogs, models, computer games, artwork, short stories, and photo exhibitions. The Personal Project is assessed using assessment criteria prescribed by the IB. 

 

A supervising teacher, and student mentor, is appointed to each student completing the Personal Project. The supervising teacher provides guidance on the completion of the Personal Project’s three major components: the final product, the process journal and the Project’s final report.  Those completing a Personal Project will do so in accordance with IB MYP criteria. The Personal Project results are moderated by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). Students receive a certificate of completion from the IBO near the start of the Year 12 academic year.


Community Engagement  

In addition to the MYP’s academic requirements, students are also expected to fulfill the MYP’s Community Engagement requirements. The College develops responsible citizenship by encouraging students to explore the nature of communities and their needs. These requirements are built around the notion of responsible action and the activities students engage in are monitored to ensure the minimum requirements are being met and the activities are age-appropriate. 

 

End of MYP Certificate 

Students who have completed the MYP will be awarded an MYP Completion Certificate. The certificate will carry the endorsement of the ESF and Discovery College. 

The passing conditions for the MYP Completion Certificate are: 

  • An aggregate of at least 36 points across their eight subject areas and the Personal Project 

  • Achieving a minimum MYP subject grade of ‘2’ in every MYP subject and at least a ‘3’ for the Personal Project 

  • Successful completion of all Community Engagement (CE) requirements. 

 

The Certificate will include overall MYP subject grades for all eight subject areas. The Certificate will also provide evidence of how a student has met the College’s CE expectations. These students will also receive formal recognition of their Personal Project and CE achievement from the IB. The IB will release these results in September the following academic year. 

LEARNING PROGRAMME - MYP 

 

Learning teams and Learning Advisors 

All students will be in a Learning Team. Learning Teams meet each morning for 10 minutes and once a week for one block for Extended Learning Team. Your child will have an assigned Learning Advisor over the course of their time at Discovery College.  The role of a Learning Advisor is to work with a small group of students to support their socio-emotional wellbeing and learning needs. 

 

Learning Advisors get to know each student in their group, help to monitor their welfare and progress, and are the constant at the start of every school day. Advisors and Year level Deans deliver the Personal and Social Education curriculum to their student groups.  Personal and Social Education programmes are linked to positive learning approaches and developmental outcomes such as knowledge of self, self-efficacy, healthy decision making and risk taking, goal setting, negotiation, reflection and empowerment. 

 

The time together will be spent either assisting the students to look at curriculum progress, goal setting, checking on due dates, or providing academic and pastoral support. The Learning Advisor will be the centre of the student support system and be supported by a Dean responsible for that year level. 

 

Curriculum coverage

The timetable is made up of four blocks each day, covering Language and Literature, Language Acquisition (Chinese A and B or Spanish), Individuals and Societies, Mathematics, Science, Physical and Health Education, Design or the Arts (Visual Arts, Theatre and Music).  Subjects rotate over a fortnight. Each block lasts 80 minutes.  

 

Discovery Time occurs each day, and age appropriate activities are offered depending on the Year Level.  It is a time in which they may have Year level assemblies, taught Study Skills and organisation, be involved in electives, completing CE/CAS requirements, meeting with their Personal Project supervisors or student mentors, or be a time in which they can choose their own activities under the guidance of adults. Students may elect to meet with teachers or a counsellor, study a topic of interest in further depth, complete assigned work, engage in physical activity, read, or relax with friends, according to what is in their year level schedule. Teachers from most subject areas are available to help students with their learning during this block. This is a time to specifically provide an environment where students assume increasing independence and responsibility.
